Our Story

One day, I decided to take my German Shepherd and Chihuahua with me for a walk through the hills. As we made our way toward the top, an enormous roar suddenly echoed across the valley. The sound was so powerful that I could feel the vibration in my chest.

I instinctively looked down for my dogs—but they were already gone.

By the time I looked up, they were nearly a hundred yards away, racing back toward the house with their tails tucked beneath them. All I could see were the backs of their feet as they disappeared down the hillside.

That was enough of a warning for me.

I immediately ran down the hill, occasionally looking behind me to see if anything was following. Fortunately, I wasn't being pursued. I ran as fast as I could until I reached the house, where my dogs were already waiting for me at the gate. Judging by the looks on their faces, it was almost as if they were saying, “Didn't you see us evacuate?”

The following day, a friend from Jamaica came to visit. He was uncomfortable around dogs, so I put mine safely in the garage while we sat outside and relaxed.

After a while, my friend suddenly pointed toward the other side of the fence.

“Hey, T something is peeking behind that boulder on the other side of the fence."

I decided to sneak around an identical boulder on my side.

When I came to the end of the boulder, there was an African male lion peeking behind the boulder like my friend said.

For a moment, I had to decide whether to retreat into the house or stay where I was. I reasoned that if this lion could easily clear the eight-foot fence between us, he probably would have done so already.

So I stayed.

“Hey, Homie,” I said.

The lion slowly revealed more of his enormous face. It almost seemed as though I had ruined his attempt to remain hidden. He then walked toward the gate and carefully studied the lock, as if trying to figure out whether there was a way through.

Realizing the gate wasn't going anywhere, he stepped back several feet and opened his enormous mouth, displaying his teeth for what felt like an eternity.

At that moment, only one thought crossed my mind:

“That isn't just a lion—that looks like a dinosaur.”

Eventually, he turned toward a nearby boulder, glanced back at me, and made an incredible leap through the air.

All I could do was watch and laugh to myself.

That lion must have been watching too much stolen cable.

It was an encounter I would never forget—a remarkable reminder of the power, intelligence, and unpredictability of the animals we share this world with.
